The Battle of Kargil, also known as Operation Vijay, was a major military operation fought between the Indian Army and the Pakistan Armed Forces. It was one of the highest-altitude wars of the 20th century and the conflict remains relevant in modern times.

The operation was planned to clear the Kargil sector of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. The Kargil War was fought between the Indian Army and the Pakistan Armed Forces, with support from the United States. The operation was designed to capture the Kargil peak, the highest point in Jammu and Kashmir.

The war began on May 31, 1971, and ended on September 28, 1974, with the Batlok Tunnel being the temporary border-bridging border-opening alternative. It was captured by the Indian Army on the night of May 31–32, with the capture of the peak, known as Shaurya Fort, by the Pakistan Armed Forces on June 1, 1974.

In the meantime, the area was used as a battlefield by the Pakistan Army, resulting in the temporary border-opening. A total of 5,544 soldiers were killed in the war, with the Pakistan Army losing 1,252 soldiers in Kargil. India suffered even more, with 1,909 soldiers killed. Both armies sustained significant casualties and the death of prominent military officers.
